Before you place your flowers in water, cut 1 inch away from the stem. The stems absorb water better from a fresh cut, so you'll want to trim your flowers from time to time. For tight blooms, use warm water to help open up the petals and bigger blooms.
Using florist foam helps keep your flowers in place, and will help keep shorter flowers well-watered. Be sure to strip off any leaves that will fall below the waterline.
When arranging, place larger, heavier flowers first, then fill in with foliage and lighter, airier flowers. Your bouquet, when finished, should be one and a half times taller than your container, and the width should balance out the height.
For a subtler arrangement, pick monochromatic flowers in different textures instead of a variety of boldly colored flowers.
Bonus tip: it's easier to arrange on a lazy susan, so you can spin the arrangement and ensure it looks good from all sides.
